Red wine—it has made its rounds before in the field of health care. In the past, studies suggested that red wine was beneficial for heart health. That’s because the dark wine contained resveratrol, which is an antioxidant that may help the heart by increasing the levels of good cholesterol. So what does red wine have to do with oral health?

Is the Red Wine Hype Real?

Media outlets and researchers, including some from Colgate and the ADA, have looked into the claim that red wine may help prevent tooth decay. The conclusion, there is no definite evidence that red wine is beneficial for oral health. The same has been said for red wine and heart health. No one should rely on a hype to find a solution to a health problem. Rely on your team of health care professionals—that’s the best thing you can do.

If you want to boost oral health and prevent caries, follow these basic preventative tips:

  • Brush twice a day
  • Floss daily between teeth and near gumline
  • Reduce intake of sugary and acidic food and beverages
  • Visit the dentist every six months

Your mouth is in a fight against plaque. Bacteria feed off of food particles and attempt to produce more bacteria to build up on the teeth. It’s a daily battle to keep bacteria at bay and teeth free of plaque. But if you have the right tools for the job, it’s much easier to maintain your oral health, even give it a boost. Oral Health
 
Keep these handy at all times:
  • Toothbrush
  • Floss
  • Mouthwash 

Maintain Your Dental Tools

You will need to replace your toothbrush every three months or so, and the American Dental Association recommends you toss a toothbrush once the bristles are frayed because it won’t be able to properly grasp food particles and plaque.
 
For floss, it needs to be replaced every time. Do not reuse floss.
 
Other dental products, such as toothpaste and mouthwash, do have expiration dates. No one usually notices the dates, but check the box the next time your purchase your toothpaste. Expired toothpaste and mouthwash are not dangerous, but expired products can lose their effectiveness after a certain point.
 

Avoid Habits That Create More Plaque

Another tactic is avoiding habits that create more plaque. Here are some things people do that gets them in a sticky situation.
  • Not brushing and flossing on a regular basis
  • Not utilizing mouthwash with fluoride (helps prevent tooth decay)
  • Not going to the dentist
  • Eating too many acidic and sweet treats
